Board-certified psychiatrist Mikki Barker, DO, has been practicing medicine for over 35 years and currently serves patients at Wendell Street Psychiatric, LLC, in Fairbanks, Alaska. Having served the community of Fairbanks for over 20 years, Dr. Barker offers her expertise in treating a wide variety of psychiatric illnesses and bettering the lives of all her patients.
Dr. Barker completed her bachelor’s in human development, biology, and Spanish at California State University, East Bay, in Hayward, California, in 1981. She went on to attend the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific at Western University in Pomona, California, where she graduated in 1987 with her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.
In between her undergraduate and medical degrees, Dr. Barker also attended Contra Costa Community College for nurse training. Upon graduation, Dr. Barker completed her psychiatric internship and residency at Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center, formerly known as King/Drew Medical Center, in Willowbrook, California.
After her residency training, Dr. Barker practiced at several hospitals across California, Florida, and Indiana, with her career finally bringing her to Alaska in 1996. Throughout her extensive career, Dr. Barker has provided psychiatric care in a number of settings, including both inpatient and outpatient facilities, jail and correctional facilities, nonprofits, and county hospitals. Her recognitions include being named one of the Caring Physicians of Los Angeles in 1990, a Young Careerist - Business and Professional Women in Los Angeles award in 1989, and Exceptional Women in Human Services in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2008.
Since 2007, Dr. Barker has lent her services as a psychiatrist and addictionologist to patients at Wendell Street Psychiatric, LLC, specializing in a wide range of mental health issues, performing comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, leading support groups, and training a number of health care professionals. She is certified by the American Board of Physician Specialties and the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons.
Dr. Barker is affiliated with the Florida Medical Association, the Osteopathic Physicians & Surgeons of California, the Alaska Osteopathic Medical Association, the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of General Practitioners, and the Los Angeles County Medical Association. She also previously served as the president of the National Osteopathic Medical Association and had various roles working with the National Medical Association.
To better serve her patients, Dr. Barker is fluent in Japanese, Spanish, and English.
